Many people with autism are over- or under-sensitive to sensory impressions, have difficulty relaxing and have problems processing and communicating information. Nenko has been supplying adapted (sensory) toys, snoezel materials, snoezel (multi-sensory) areas and (learning) aids for 35 years.

Can you make it to the end?

"Ok, to the shopping center. Fortunately, mama is with me. Going to the car, I will be on the same passenger seat as normal. Mama, could you turn off the music? Here we go, with mine cuddle dinosaurs in my hands. Can I hold your hand mama? Thinking by myself why the doors can automatically open? I used to go to that playground with my sister too. Ooh, flashing light… photos. Why is one shoestring off? What’s in her bag? Money drops hardly on the floor. A girl who is walking by slurps. Young men, do you want a balloon? They are nice, but what’s better, green, blue, red, gold or glitter? Ho wait, I do recognize this smell, grandmother has this perfume, or is it from my teacher from school? Counting on my fingers from one, two, three, four… Why is everyone looking at me? Stimulations everywhere… To many stimulations. HELP!"

Overstimulation and autism

When people are overstimulated, more stimuli come in from the environment than the brain can process. Behavior that can be shown as a result in people with autism is fear and stress reactions, which can cause angry or aggressive reactions. Fear can also result in stiffening or even creating insecurity and cause flight behavior.

Once overstimulation occurs, it is difficult for autistic people to concentrate or have social interactions. It is important to observe carefully what caused the overstimulation and to remove the cause or reason for the overstimulation. At most, creating a safe and sound environment for the people is the best solution.

Tips for overstimulation for people with autism

  1. A Sensory Room is a room where sounds or lighting can be controlled and where soothing music is played. A good Sensory Room is a space that takes away restlessness and where the attention is focused on pleasant sitting or lying down, without disturbing elements from outside. Moreover, it is important to create safe corners where people can relax and from where they can have a good overview of everything in the room. Sensory Rooms offer plenty of space and freedom to offer the right form of stimuli, depending on the need. However, in case of overstimulation, the relaxing, soothing and safe aspect of Snoezelen is especially important.

  2. Cuddling gives a calming effect on people. Our interactive cats and dogs, our affection animals and our communication dolls are ideal for this, if you can't keep a real pet.

  3. Rocking, rocking in a rocking chair or sitting on a wobbly cushion has a calming effect. Rocking or wobbling helps to distract your mind and focus on your body due to gravity demanding your attention.

  4. Weighted vests or weighted blankets help to calm down. The weight stimulates our sleeping hormone and sense of security and safety, which calms the mind and body.

  5. When someone is hypersensitive to sounds, earmuffs can help perfectly. Hypersensitivity to sound is common in people with autism. By dampening the sound, the person receives less stimuli. Music can disturb peace in some situations, making earmuffs a good alternative!

  6. Chewing jewelry can be used for both people who need stimuli and for people who are overstimulated. Chewing helps regulate stimuli. A teething tool helps to better regulate feelings of stress and overstimulation and reduces tension.

  7. Fidget toys , also known as fidget toys, are tools that help people with autism or AD(H)D calm down. Children and adults who are easily overstimulated find it difficult to sit still. Fidgeting ensures that you calm down and can focus on what is important again. They are also useful if someone must wait somewhere for a long time or sit still. Most tactile and fidget products are small, making them easy to carry or fit in a pocket!
'An ode to the passion and strong qualities of people with autism'

Autism

'Learning to learn', This phrase sounds simple, but it is less obvious for many people with autism. People with autism process information differently than people without autism, and this also must be done in an efficient way. In addition, generalizing skills is often difficult, details are often paid attention to, so that the big picture is lost sight of and people with autism can be distracted by stimuli that causes them to lose the overview. Nenko offers a range of specifically developed products for this target group.

One-box tasks
One-box tasks are clear and practical tasks; clearly used to stimulate people with autism in various developmental areas in a fun & playful way. There is a clear beginning and end to every task. The One-Box tasks are suitable for different developmental ages. By offering several short tasks, it is easier to maintain concentration longer and thus achieve more results in terms of development. We also have tasks that function as a motivational task which can also be used as a reward for the effort made in tasks that require a little more concentration.

Time Timers
"How much time do we have left?" It is a frequently asked question. Elapsed time is an abstract concept, difficult to understand and even more difficult to manage. But learning to deal with time is the first step towards independence for many. It is therefore important to understand the concept of elapsed time to learn to deal with time efficiently.

Earmuffs
For someone with autism, all stimuli can quickly be experienced as too much. By using products such as earmuffs when this person is in a busy environment, one can quickly ensure that external stimuli is minimized. The earmuffs can then ensure that the person with autism can go somewhere more comfortably and with more certainty.

Autism and understimulation

Understimulation is not always noticed by others. Understimulation seems less serious than overstimulation, but understimulation can also have very unpleasant consequences.

With understimulation, little or no stimuli are processed by the human brain. This can be distorted as it seems to the outside world that these autistic people feel comfort, but understimulated, autistic people often feel gloomy, don't feel like doing anything and have the feeling of missing something but don't know what themselves.

Some people who are understimulated actively look for stimuli themselves by rocking back and forth, making noises or banging their head against something.

Tips for autism with understimulation

To prevent undesirable situations, targeted stimuli can be offered in the event of understimulation that ultimately ensures better alertness and correct activation. The various senses are then actively stimulated or activated, also known as sensory integration.
  1. Chewing jewelry can be used to regulate tension. Chewing jewelry helps to reduce feelings of stress, regulate and reduce tension. Especially at times when there is a lot of stimuli, chewing on teething jewelry can provide relief. Peace is created, but the senses are stimulated.

  2. Sensory toys can be very good for people with autism. One or more senses can be stimulated, or work can be done on the detailed processing of certain sensory stimuli. By means of icons and filters on our website, the right toys can easily be found.

  3. Snoezelen can be aimed at relaxation and rest, but also at sensory stimulation. The word Snoezelen is composed of the two dutch words "Snuffelen" and "Doezelen". “Snuffelen” stands for the more active side of Snoezelen. Meaning discovering and being stimulated is important when understimulated. “Doezelen” stands more for the passive part. Enjoying the peaceful environment and relaxing and bringing back safety and peace. Sensory stimulation, the active part, is done by offering all kinds of (primary) sensory stimuli in a targeted manner. The senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste) and the lesser known (proprioceptive and vestibular) are called upon to find an entrance into the world of people with multiple disabilities, young children or people with dementia. By using variety in light, contrast, sound and touch, senses are stimulated. Be careful not to overstimulate and use a sensory product such as a bubble tube or sensory projector separately instead of in a complete sensory room!

  4. Wobble cushions or rocking chairs allow someone to sit actively. To be able to sit well, you will have to feel the balance and be active.

  5. Comfort rooms or Safe rooms are safe spaces in which people with autism who feel anxious, angry or restless can retreat or isolate themselves for a while. In these rooms, which are often equipped with safe, softly covered walls, there are few stimuli so that people can get rid of the hustle and bustle in the house or in a department. It can support stimulus processing and prevent a crisis or escalation due to overstimulation.
Autism

"Someone with behavioral problems is not difficult, he or she just has a hard time"

The developmental disorder autism is difficult to describe. Autism can be expressed in different ways and in different forms. For example, we know ASD, classic autism, asperger's and PDD-NOS. The most common characteristics of autism are limitations in interaction, communication disorders, repetitive unchanging patterns of behavior and daily activities, more sensitive to certain stimuli and problems with information processing.

Some people with autism also have an intellectual disability, but people with a high IQ can also have autism. Autism can therefore be expressed differently from person to person, it refers to a diverse group of people in whom problems differ in severity and type, with all possible types and combinations of limitations and qualities.

Everything that people with autism see, hear, smell, feel and taste they process in a different way in the brain. This means that people with autism can have a lot of trouble with "normal" life. Autism can also cause additional psychological problems.
